WHITE CHRISTMAS - Santa as Trendsetter

Image
It's almost Christmas. I don't shop, I have no family in the States, I'm single, so I'm relaxed. But others are super-busy. So let me be brief for the last blog of the Year ! It will be pretty cold over the Holidays in Los Angeles which is nice in many ways because it sets free delicious visions of coats and stylish sweaters, fancy shawls and a glove here and there. But most of all it tickles the fantasy bone of a longing that simply must have something to do with childhood and lots and lots of Nordic fairy tales: Snow for Christmas! I'm not immune to that kind of longing since I grew up in Germany where Christmases were white indeed very often. But I know it's not going to happen in LA. So what? We're grown-ups and the only white this Christmas will be on the heads of a lot of people - and that includes Santa Himself, the M ighty M aven of style - longish hair, beard and all. Come to think of it, naked, or let's say, in his Un...

SILVER IN THE DARK

Image
We - the official Silver Sisters, Gray Goddesses, White-Heat-Hotties, Silverettas etc. do make fun of LA which is supposedly a gray-free zone as if not to shock its often all-embracing, but sometimes prejudiced residents with the cruel facts of aging . We got that, Thank You! The percentage of  gray-haired  women is probably as  sky-high   (JOKE) as the percentage of female directors or other women in p ower .   However, since going gray, after all an act of courage, somehow comes with a certain amount of feistiness and derring-do. So we will not be deterred.   (left to right: Irene, Sabine, Victoria Marie, Peggy, Gloria, Emma)  As it happened, Victoria Marie of the "Gray is the New Blonde"  https://www.facebook.com/GrayIsTheNewBlonde/?pnref=lhc website had the brilliant  idea to get a few Gorgeous Gray heads together for Happy Hour and picked an amazing location here in Los Angeles. Movies, Movies, Movies!

Image
I've spent a week in the darkness of movie theaters thanks to the fabulous AFI FEST (AFI is the American Film Institute) https://www.facebook.com/AFIFEST/?fref=ts  who organized its annual film festival in Hollywood's movie theaters. Being armed with a press badge I had the luxury of seeing up to 3 movies a day , until I stumbled out of the dark in a daze, only to be nearly blinded by the relentless California sun. There is something deliciously forbidden about going to the movies during the day. The creative movie community of filmmakers, journalists, social media "experts" is mostly young, and if I were a timid, insecure older woman I could have felt like an outsider who had smuggled herself into a (self-proclaimed) hipster environment that should not be infiltrated by gray-haired females but left entirely to the young. But a lovely surprise happened. I've met quite a few very young writers and filmmakers who actually stroke up a conversation w...

New York, New York - Ready For The Silver Foxes?

Image
Since I have my blog "Gray in LA" I've been checking out my  surroundings and travels like an eagle-eyed inspector looking for clues and more than just 50 shades of gray. In Central Park I'm in New York , my old hometown, for which I still have passionate and romantic feelings like I had for my favorite boyfriend.  Cities have certain colors , just like people, I think. So, coincidence or not, New York is definitely a steely, platinum , gray and silver city documented by all the great buildings from the Empire State and the Chrysler Building to the new WTC Memorial. Gleaming, cool, sleek! Strangely perfect for ladies of the gray persuasion. In Los Angeles , (on the right) one looks very different because it is an all soft and natural color-orgy in gold, white, green, dark pinks , flaming reds, avocado-greens, lemon-yellows (like some California hair) and Jacaranda- (a tree) purple . Whatever color - LA and NY are two absolutely fabulous and fascinati...
